Counselling

Welcome to Narrative Therapy

"Our lives and their pathways are not fixed in stone; instead they are shaped by story.  The ways in which we understand and share the stories of our lives therefore make all the difference.  If we tell stories that emphasize only desolation, then we become weaker.  Alternatively, we can tell our stories in ways that make us stronger, in ways that soothe the losses, in ways that ease sorrow."

- (David Denborough, Retelling the stories of our lives, 2014)

What is Narrative Therapy?

At the heart of my approach is the belief that every person is the author of their own story. Narrative therapy is a collaborative and empowering approach that helps you reclaim your voice and rewrite the stories that shape your life.

Narrative therapy is grounded in the idea that our lives are shaped by the stories we tell about
ourselves and the world around us. These stories may be influenced by societal norms,
past experiences, or others' expectations, and they can sometimes have us feeling stuck, limited, or
misunderstood.

In our work together, we'll explore the stories of your life, and re-author them in ways that align with your values, hopes, and preferred futures. This process is especially powerful for folks who are later-in-life identifying as Autistic, ADHD, or otherwise neurodivergent, after decades of having the stories of their life highjacked by the dominant discourse of neuronormativity. Together, we'll work to untangle the stories that have been imposed upon you, andinstead, highlight the rich, nuanced narratives that reflect your preferred ways of being.

Why Narrative Therapy for Late-Identified Autistic / AuDHD Folks?

For many of us, discovering our Autistic or AuDHD identity later in life can be both liberating and
challenging. You may find that the stories you've lived by no longer fit, or perhaps they never did... perhaps they've been warped by misunderstandings and misconceptions.

Narrative therapy offers a compassionate and non-pathologizing approach to understanding your
life and the context in which you've lived it, and to shine a new light on parts of your stories that can show you how to move forward into your next chapter.

What to Expect

In our sessions, we'll engage in meaningful conversations that honour your lived experiences and the wisdom you bring. We'll focus on your strengths, skills, and values, helping you to re-author your story in a way that feels authentic and empowering.

Whether you're navigating the journey of self-discovery, seeking to understand your identity, or looking to create a more fulfilling life, narrative therapy offers a pathway forward that is deeply respectful of your unique perspective.

I acknowledge the Kaurna people, the traditional custodians of the land on which I live and work.

I pay my respects to Aboriginal Elders, past, present, and emerging, and extend that respect to all First Nations people.

I recognise that sovereignty was never ceded.  This is, was, and always will be Aboriginal land.
